By Eliza Mendoza

Large machinery commonly known as heavy equipment is mostly used for agricultural purposes during transportation and in construction. One thing that you should know about the machinery is that running it can be expensive. Poor maintenance of the machine will reduce its life span as it will require being repaired regularly. This is something that will result to breaking down of the machines. There are lots of benefits achieved in daily maintenance of the machinery. This will help in identifying problems that may later cause greater complications. Poorly maintained machinery is hazardous to those operating it. Provided here are heavy equipment service measures that are quite helpful.

To do a daily maintenance you need to make a schedule first and purpose to stick on it. There are various tasks that have to be carried out every day while others are done in a longer schedule. When you have set your schedule, you should now make the checklist for daily maintenance.

During daily routine, you should check the various pieces of the machinery to be operated. One should check if there is any worn out part or any sign of coolant or oil leakage. The tires should be inflated everyday to the right pressure to avoid bursting. Debris on the machinery should be well cleaned. One should feel the chains and belts to ensure they are held tightly in position.

The parts of the machinery which are linked together should be greased daily for lubrication purpose. All the safety signs and equipment should be checked and put in place where they can be reached easily. It is important to check the fluid level on coolant, hydraulic and oils every day. If the level is down, topping up should be done before any work commences. This is because operating machinery with low levels of fluids can shorten its lifespan. The air filter should also be checked and cleaned if necessary.

Quarterly maintenance should be done when the machinery has run for 500 hours or has been used for about 3 months. This is a more through maintenance work which includes changing the engine oil as well as the oil and hydraulic filter. The diesel fuel filter should be replaced as part of quarterly maintenance procedure.

The final maintenance should be done at end of season. End of season maintenance is done at end of every year. During this time, the transmission fluid is changed as well as the hydraulic oil. One should check on the condition of the antifreeze in the radiator to ensure it is in good working condition for the winter season. The hoses and belts should also be carefully examined and any problem corrected for safety.

Draining of the fuel that was being used during summer should be done so as to refill it. Draining the fluid will help to prevent the fuel lines from hardening especially during the cold season. Thorough cleaning of the machinery should be carried out while paying close attention to the engine and undercarriage. Cleaning of cab and air filters should also be carried out.

The air conditioning unit should be checked and cleaned. All the lights should be inspected if they are in good working condition and any faulty one replaced. The tires should also be inspected for any sign of wear and tear. Any tire which is worn out should be replaced during this period of heavy equipment service routine so you can avoid losing valuable work time.
